On Decmber 8, 2020, Pope Francis issued a decree inaugurating an entire year dedicated to St. Joseph, coinciding the anniversary of his declaration as Patron of the Catholic Church. In a written statement, the Pope hailed St. Joseph as a model of fatherhood and a key intercessor in modern times.
In his Apostolic Letter “Patris corde” (“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis reminds us of the 150th anniversary of the declaration of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church and reminds us how Joseph is an example of patience, quiet comfort, and as one who listens to God’s will. Although St, Joseph is not featured in the forefront in Sacred Scripture, he is nonetheless known as a model of paternal strength in the Holy Family. Historically, many Catholics venerate St. Joseph by constructing and decorating “altars” on his feast day. This tradition is particularly associated with Italian Catholics. St. Joseph Altars are often divided into three tiers, with a statue of St. Joseph at the head. Some devout people place candles and religious articles upon the altars. Offerings of food are added too, to symbolize the bounty the Lord God bestows through St. Joseph's intercession.
Here at Holy Trinity, we continue this tradition in memory of the Italian people, who comprise a vital part of our parish history. Below we present photos of our 2021 St. Joseph Altar. Special thanks to the Holy Trinity Altar Society for their love and dedication.
