Effective October 10, 2022, Holy Trinity has been canonically designated as Minor Shrine to the Shreveport Martyrs: the Five Priests of the 1873 Yellow Fever Epidemic. We welcome all pilgrims to visit the shrine, to pray for the cause of canonization of the Five Priests, and to ask for special favors from God through their intercession. Read about the Five Priests, their history and dedication to the ministry of Jesus Christ, and their importance to the history of Holy Trinity below.
Holy Trinity is pleased to share some updates related to the Five Priests’ cause for canonization. In October 2022, Bishop Francis Malone issued a canonical Decree, affirming the Dicastery of the Cause of Saints’ nihil obstat, which means, “nothing hinders” or “nothing stands in the way” to pursue the path to canonization, starting with the Diocesan Inquiry. The Prefect of the Dicastery has now granted that the five causes be considered one single cause! Fr. Duane included Bishop Francis Malone’s Decree in the parish bulletin of October 29-30, and I has posted a copy prominently visible in our church for six months.
Holy Trinity Catholic Church offered a special showing of the documentary film "The Five Priests" for parishioners and guests. The film chronicles the lives of the very Five Priests who served the sick in the 1873 Yellow Fever Epidemic in Shreveport. This exclusive premier was held at the Robinson Film Theater on Texas Street in downtown Shreveport. A Q&A session followed, with the authors, Dr. Cheryl White and Mr. Ryan Smith. The ticket price was complimentary for parishioners of Holy Trinity and Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parishes.

On December 8, 2020, the Diocese of Shreveport received wonderful news from the Vatican... a declatation "nihil obstat" for each of the five priests. This means, literally, "nothing in the way," or "no impediment" to the opening of a cause for canonization. It was by Bishop Malone's act on December 8 in the ceremony at Holy Trinity that they became Servants of God, the first of four steps in the saintly canonization process!

The Catholic Church professes that the witnesses who have preceded us into the kingdom - especially those whom the Church recognizes as saints - share in the living tradition of prayer by the example of their lives. This is why saintly intercession is so important and efficacious. The people of the Diocese of Shreveport are encouraged to ask the five priests of the Yellow Fever Epidemic to intercede for us and for the whole world. Fr. Peter Mangum wrote an excellent article about how to pray through the intercession of a Servant of God - the article will be linked here, once it is made available online in the Catholic Connection publication.
A new Internet site entitled "Shreveport Martyrs" has been established to provide information about the five priests. Click (here) or the image above to visit the site and learn about each priest's history, to review press releases, to request Holy Cards, and more.
