What is an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion?

In the Eucharistic Liturgy of the Catholic Church, there may be deputed lay ministers to serve at the altar and assist the Priest and the Deacon.  Among other duties, they may be deputed to distribute Holy Communion as extraordinary ministers (GIRM 100).

Requirements for Ministry

• Be a registered parishioner for at least one year

• Be at least 18 years of age

• Be a mature Catholic in good standing, having received the Sacrament of Confirmation, if married, married in the eyes of the Church

• Be a person of excellent character, who takes faith seriously, has respect and reverence for the Eucharist and Sacred Scripture

• Be capable of fulfilling the required tasks

• Be properly trained

• Be approved by the pastor (and, for EMHCs, be appointed by the bishop of the Diocese of Shreveport)
