The year 2021 ushered in many special milestones for Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Throughout the year, the parish turned particular attention to its five priests who gave their lives serving the sick during the 1873 Yellow Fever Epidemic. (They are memorialized in the stained-glass windows of the church.) For these priests’ lives of heroic virtue, the Vatican recognized them as "Servants of God": the first step to canonization as saints. For more information on the Five Priests, click (here).
Regarding the Five Priests, Pastor Fr. Duane Trombetta stated, “The Vatican’s recognition marks a significant event for the Catholic Church and brings cause for celebration especially to our city and state. We pray these five priests’ story will be a source of inspiration to many.” Indeed, many were soon know of the priests' lives, thanks to a new book, “The Surest Path to Heaven” published by The History Press, and a new documentary film “The Five Priests” which premiers at the Strand Theater November 4, 2021.
In addition to the Five Priests, the clergy and parishioners of Holy Trinity also celebrate three wonderful anniversary commemorations in 2021! On September 26, 2021, a special Mass was held to celebrate the 165th Anniversary of the parish, the 125th Jubilee of the church, and the 122nd Anniversary of the church's dedication. The entire weekend's magnificent liturgies were punctuated by beautiful music and the 10:30 am Sunday Mass celebrated by Bishop Francis Malone.
During the bishop's visit, Holy Trinity unveiled a beautiful framed Episcopal Blessing, and presented the first annual “Trinitarian Award” for exceptional contributions to our parish. The inaugural recipient was parishioner Lawrence W. Pettiette, Jr. who offered exceptional legal counsel and other support to Holy Trinity during the past year. Congratulations to Larry!
It was wonderful as the clergy and parishioners gathered as a parish family and enjoyed "coffee in the courtyard" in the prayer garden. The beautiful weather, manicured landscaping (thank you Altar Society!), the delicious refreshments, and the robust sales of Holy Trinity merchandise and gifts all helped make the event successful and memorable. Fr. Trombetta extended personal thanks to all who attended.
Also at the Mass of Sunday, September 26, in the presence of Bishop Malone, Fr. Trombetta made a very important announcement. Since 1947 our church's neighboring building, the Greyhound Bus Station, had been both a blessing and a challenge. Since its closure in 2019, the parishioners were concerned it could be converted into an inconsistent neighbor. But, with the support of Bishop Malone and the Parish Finance Council, Holy Trinity purchased - and is now the owner of - the former Greyhound bus station! All the parishioners joined in applause for this outstanding strategic opportunity for the parish’s future.
Lastly, during the special anniversary Mass of Sunday, September 26, 2021, Bishop Francis Malone made an announcement of significance to our parish and to Fr. Trombetta personally. Bishop Malone officially appointed Fr. Trombetta as Pastor of Holy Trinity (he formerly served as Administrator). Fr. Trombetta is just the thirteenth pastor of this venerable and historic parish. Fr. Trombetta gave tribute to the clergy who have gone before him, expressed his honor and thanks, and assured all that he would serve the people of God with prayerful dedication.
